In my previous post “A Slower Rhythm Through the Seasons” I introduced our annual fall nesting series and shared thoughts on easing gently into each season. Letting your home evolve slowly from one season to the next creates a calm, intentional atmosphere that benefits both your space and your well-being.
Below are simple, practical ways to begin transitioning your home decor from summer to fall.
You don’t need a complete overhaul. Small, thoughtful adjustments made over a few weeks will refresh your rooms and help you welcome the coziness of autumn. Many of these ideas use items you may already have on hand, or can be achieved by adding just one or two new pieces.
Here are 7 simple tips for fall decorating.

1. Add layers to create a snug, cozy feel.
As we move toward fall, reintroduce layers that add warmth and texture. Woven materials like rattan and seagrass are versatile year-round but feel especially inviting in autumn. Use woven trays on coffee tables, dressers or nightstands to group books and accessories and to add a natural, grounded element to your vignettes.
2. Introduce warmer tones gradually.
If your decor trend is neutral or cool-toned, bring in just a few warmer accents to signal the season. This could be a book with a muted rust spine, a sprig of fall foliage, a pillow in a warmer shade of blue, or simply relying on woven pieces to introduce earthy hues. Small color shifts can make a big difference in the room’s mood.
3. Swap pillows and rugs.
Use zippered pillow covers or lightweight rugs so seasonal swaps are easy. Choose softer fabrics and slightly warmer colors to add comfort. Layering rugs—placing a softer rug over a sisal or natural fiber base—adds depth and texture while still being simple to change back when spring returns.
4. Use foliage that feels organic and seasonal.
Move toward florals and greenery that reflect late-summer and early-fall tones. Hydrangeas, muted eucalyptus and foliage with more subdued colors read as autumnal and pair beautifully with natural textures. You can use fresh or high-quality faux stems to create effortless seasonal arrangements.
5. Layer ambient lighting to transform mood.
As daylight fades earlier, ambient light becomes essential for creating a cozy atmosphere. Add table lamps, floor lamps and reading lamps to soften corners and create pools of warm light. Overhead lighting can be useful, but it won’t produce the intimate, layered glow that makes a room feel inviting.
6. Create cozy moments with small comforts.
The little details encourage staying in and savoring autumn evenings: flickering battery candles, a favorite book, a mug for tea or hot coffee, and a soft throw. These simple touches make everyday moments feel intentional and restful.
7. Add subtle visual cues to suggest the season.
Switch or add a few accessories that hint at fall—swap in seasonal artwork, place a fall botanical on a tabletop, or prop a small framed landscape on a shelf. You don’t have to overhaul your decor; a few carefully chosen pieces will suggest the season and enhance the overall vibe of your home.
Happy August — enjoy the gentle shift into fall!
