And so it begins! I’m excited that the side yard project is finally underway. Just before work started we discovered something we hadn’t really considered before — this side yard actually has a view. I’m not sure why we missed it earlier; maybe we were always watching our step, focused on getting to the backyard without tripping. It was a happy discovery and immediately changed how we see the space: it can be a destination, not merely a passage to the yard.

I’m already imagining a few special design details for the area, including a charming new light we ordered from Rejuvenation — the Carson Wall Sconce — which will sit on the back porch beside the eventual Dutch door. As the project progresses I’ll share more of the exterior design vision and the choices that shaped it.
With large, messy projects like this one you often expect it to “get worse before it gets better,” but so far the opposite has felt true. Removing the old concrete made the space feel improved almost immediately. That small change has been energizing and encouraging for the rest of the work to come.
