Modern Coastal Farmhouse: How to Achieve the Look

Create a beautiful home with modern coastal farmhouse style.

Modern Coastal Farmhouse Style

Last year my daughters and I visited the Street of Dreams in Portland, a tradition we try to keep when we can. One of the homes that stuck with me was a modern coastal farmhouse — a blend of clean contemporary lines with warm, lived-in farmhouse and coastal touches. I want to revisit that house here and highlight the features that make this hybrid style so appealing.

Modern Coastal Farmhouse Living Room

The term “modern” in modern coastal farmhouse simply points to a fresh interpretation of classic farmhouse and coastal elements. These homes often keep traditional materials and craftsmanship but present them in updated proportions, cleaner lines, and a lighter palette. That balance gives the style a familiar, timeless feel while still looking current.

It’s easy to get swept up in trends, but you don’t have to. Focus on architectural choices and durable finishes you’ll love for years — those are the things that prevent a room from feeling dated. If the features you select have roots in homes from decades past and also work practically in your space, they’re likely to stand the test of time.

Elements like subway tile, painted paneled walls, stone countertops (marble or quartz), exposed wood beams, and hardwood or tile floors are classics that translate well into this style. When they’re executed with quality materials and thoughtful craftsmanship, they feel both timeless and fresh. These surfaces pair equally well with coastal accents or farmhouse details.

Smaller accessories are where trends come and go — and that’s fine. Trendy pieces can add personality and be swapped out as tastes change. Alternatively, collecting classic pieces like ironstone, wooden utensils, white dinnerware, and meaningful books keeps a space feeling curated and enduring.

One of the strengths of modern coastal farmhouse is its flexibility. You can blend old and new, farmhouse and coastal, and add personal treasures to create a home that feels uniquely yours. I enjoy mixing unexpected elements for a layered, collected look that still reads cohesive.

The exterior of this particular house reads more Nantucket coastal, while the interior leans farmhouse. That contrast works — you can mix exterior and interior influences to suit your taste. Personally, I might soften the farmhouse elements inside with a touch more modern coastal or lake-house touches, but that’s the beauty of styling: you choose the balance that fits you.

This house is certainly a dream in scale and detail; for everyday life I’d prefer something smaller but with the same thoughtful finishes. The same design principles apply whether you live in a large show home or a compact cottage: prioritize quality materials, consider classic architectural details, and layer in personal touches.
