How to Start Decorating a Room: My 3-Step Process

Whether decorating is your passion or a source of frustration, I’m excited to share some news: I’ll be contributing a monthly column to the newly launched My Colortopia blog. My Colortopia is designed to be a hub of inspiration, practical tools, and trusted advice from a group of experienced bloggers who write about paint, color, and home decorating.

Recognize these talented contributors?

And, here’s me.

I’m honored to be part of the My Colortopia Team.

You might wonder why I’m joining a paint-and-color site, since I’ve often admitted I’m not the biggest fan of painting. That’s exactly the reason I’m there. I want to learn more, and I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed by color choices and decorating decisions. After years of trial and error, I’ve picked up practical tips that make painting and decorating simpler. I’m looking forward to sharing a fresh monthly post with My Colortopia readers.

Over the years I’ve battled less-than-ideal paint choices—what I jokingly call “swine” colors—and I understand the desire to replace a color you tolerate with one you truly love. Those experiences taught me what works, and what to avoid, and that perspective is what I bring to the Colortopia conversation.

My Colortopia will be adding several helpful features in the coming months, including:

  • My Image Inspiration – Upload a photo of a favorite item—couch, rug, fabric, landscape—and discover colors that match and coordinate with it.
  • My Life, My Colors – A personality-based quiz to help you find colors that suit your lifestyle and tastes.
  • Ask the Colortopia Team – Submit decorating questions and get personalized advice from Colortopia contributors.
  • My Colors Folder – Save favorite hues and build custom palettes on MyColortopia.com for easy reference and comparison.
  • Paint project planning tools that estimate supplies, create shopping lists, and help you organize a painting party so friends can pitch in.
  • A visualization tool to preview how paint colors will look in a room similar to yours, helping you make decisions with confidence.

I’ve published a new post on My Colortopia where I outline my three-step process for redecorating a room. I hope you’ll find it practical and encouraging. If you have a moment, please stop by and say hello—I’d love to read your comments on my first post.

I have partnered with Glidden/AkzoNobel Paints to participate in the My Colortopia program; however, the opinions and insights I share are my own.
