Finding the Right Balance in Medium Design

AAs I’ve mentioned before, I sometimes wrestle with decorating choices for my own home because I have a split decorating personality. I love cheerful, playful decor, but I also want my home to feel tasteful and composed. When everything matches perfectly it can feel predictable and impersonal, yet too much whimsy can verge on tacky. Finding the balance between personality and refinement is the ongoing challenge.

How do you discover that sweet spot where a space feels both personal and well-designed?

I don’t want to go overboard and risk silliness, but I do want to inject a touch of fun. What feels tasteful versus tacky is subjective, so each homeowner has to decide what reflects their style. That’s the joy of decorating your own space — you get to make the choices that feel right for you.

Recently I shared pictures of yellow kitchen islands, including the kitchen featured here. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts — some of you love bold kitchen color and others prefer subtler touches. Part of me thinks a yellow island would be fun (after all, it’s just paint), while my practical side prefers introducing yellow on a chair or accessory instead.

The two sides of my style brain don’t always agree, so I let them spar until a compromise emerges. That balance is exactly what I admire in homes that blend tasteful architecture with playful finishes.

This home by Jas Design Build strikes that balance well. The strong architecture and thoughtful bones keep the overall look grounded, while bold decisions in color, pattern and style add personality and youthful energy. Dark floors, natural wood and touches of black anchor the spaces, so the playful colors feel intentional rather than chaotic. The result feels unexpected and lively without losing refinement.

Seeing homes like this gives me permission to follow the elements I love while remaining true to a composed, tasteful aesthetic. My office is finished (I’ll share it soon) and I’m now planning colors and furnishings for the rest of the house. I’m excited to see how everything comes together.

Do you ever have an inner personal style struggle when you are making decorating decisions for your home?
