Just like our first house floor plan and our previous house floor plan, many of you asked for the new house layout — so here it is. Floor plans are great for people who think visually; they show where walls sit and how rooms connect. We made this one with Floorplanner (a free floor planning site). One big difference from our earlier posts: this house has a second level. Who’s got two thumbs and a set of stairs? This girl.

When we shared a video tour of the new house, reactions varied — some people thought it looked much bigger, others thought it seemed smaller. Empty rooms are hard to judge without furniture, and the house is currently covered in blue trim and wallpaper, which may skew perception. In reality the new house and our current house are nearly identical in square footage (only about a 20-square-foot difference). The new house appears larger from the street because it has a visible second story, whereas our current house has a large addition in the back that’s not visible from outside.
A few early ideas for altering the footprint:
- Convert the large triple window in the eat-in kitchen into French doors that open onto the deck.
- Remove several interior doors on the first floor that interrupt flow (between the dining room and kitchen, and between the kitchen and foyer) to open things up.
- Take down the wall between the living room and kitchen, but install built-in bookcases on each side with a large centered opening — similar to the built-ins in our current dining room, possibly with glass doors and lighting.
- Completely renovate the chopped-up bathroom and sink nook to create one cohesive space with a large double sink and a soaker tub.
- Eventually finish the unfinished storage space at the end of the hallway. Right now it’s a raw area with exposed beams and ducts, but down the line we could add flooring and drywall to make a movie room or bunk room for Clara, a potential future child, and their friends. Update: the stairs shown in the unfinished storage lead to the attic; the labeled “unfinished storage” is on the same floor as the bedrooms (no extra steps required to reach it).
The video tour of the new house helps illustrate those ideas, and we’ve got plenty more thoughts cooking (we change our minds a lot). We’ll share a full List O’ Planz soon with all the projects and priorities — it’ll probably be long and detailed. In the meantime, here are some very rough measurements taken with one tape measure and a three-year-old underfoot.
