How Mistakes, Setbacks, and Near-Lawsuits Supercharge Success

Young House Love turned 10 this fall, so we’re taking a look back at a decade of renovating homes, growing a business, and learning—often the hard way—while doing it all in public on the world wide web. Both in decorating and in business there were defining moments that shaped where we are today. Many of those moments didn’t feel good at the time; some felt downright awful. But they were all part of the journey.

  • The slide below shows early magazine features. We’ve shared behind-the-scenes details from various shoots—DIY Magazine and The Nest—and yes, Burger often steals the spotlight.

  • We also talked about our feature on The Oprah Winfrey Network—there’s more about that in a previous post. The projector’s low color saturation gave us a funny “vampire” photo, which we still laugh about.

  • The next slides show the evolution of our lighting line. We documented the initial launch and later updates, and displayed product examples from that line.
