Charming English Cottage Makeover: Before and After Renovation

We usually visit homes in person to take a range of photos with our Canon, but we couldn’t pass up the chance to virtually tour our friend Liz’s 200‑year‑old English cottage. Charming? Absolutely. Cozy? Definitely. This cottage has personality and playful details—from a lime green lamp to a chocolate‑painted wall with writing—that make it memorable. Enjoy the tour!

Liz, her boyfriend and their two cats have lived in this delightful cottage for two years, and she began decorating from the moment they moved in. The house is quirky and unique—imagine Kate Winslet’s home in The Holiday. When friends watched the movie, many called to say, “Kate lives in your house.”

The kitchen is simple and sweet. Solid oak countertops pair nicely with an original Belfast sink that’s still in use. Liz’s orange Le Creuset kettle brightens the space (of course she enjoys a cuppa), and the oversized wall clock from Habitat provides a classic finishing touch.

From the kitchen you can see into the living area, where a fireplace once held real logs but now features an inventive screen made from firewood offcuts that cleverly conceals the TV and DVD player. It looks like stacked wood yet hides the telly—a wonderfully imaginative solution.

The living area feels cozy and welcoming, arranged with comfortable chairs and anchored by a striking retro green lamp from Habitat. It’s a small, lived‑in space that invites relaxation and conversation.

This room also once served as a formal dining area. The table is made from reclaimed planks and is paired with old school chairs, giving the space a rustic, characterful feel that complements the cottage’s history.

The bedroom is especially charming, complete with a petite fireplace. Liz chose Farrow & Ball paint colors—String and Pelt—and applied a wall decal in stages to add pattern and personality. The darker wall color creates a warm, enveloping atmosphere that suits the cottage perfectly.
