Daybed Ideas for Living Rooms + Where to Buy Them

When we first moved into this house, we pictured a cozy window seat or bench beneath the back window in our living room. The view of the mountains, water and sunsets was one of the home’s greatest features, so creating a place to sit and enjoy it felt natural.

With so many other projects, however, built-ins were postponed. Years later we still haven’t tackled that full build, though you can see a roundup of the home improvements we have completed on our blog.

Eventually we decided to add a rattan daybed to this room instead. It gives the same relaxed feel as a built-in window seat but was available immediately, so we could start enjoying the view right away.

This daybed provides an extra sleeping spot for guests, which comes in handy when family stays over. It’s also a wonderfully cozy place to curl up with a book, work on a laptop, or watch the sunset each evening.

We often use the daybed as a sofa too — adding a few pillows behind us makes it comfortable for conversations and lounging.

Of course, our dogs are perhaps the biggest fans. They act like the daybed was made just for them and spend more time there than anyone else in the family. It’s become their favorite place to relax.

One practical advantage of a daybed in a home with pets is that it’s simple to keep clean. Like a regular bed, you can use removable sheets, blankets and pillow covers that are machine washable, so maintaining a tidy spot is straightforward.

Whenever I think about moving the daybed to another room, I feel guilty—especially because the dogs love it so much. That makes relocating it a real dilemma: practicality versus keeping the family happy.

Not everyone considers a daybed for the main living room, but if you have the space one can work beautifully. Daybeds come in many styles and can fit a range of interiors, from casual and coastal to more structured or modern looks.

For our household, the daybed is easily the best spot in the house — a versatile piece that serves as seating, a guest bed, and a sunny retreat for pet naps and quiet moments.

Do you have a piece of furniture you’d hesitate to move because someone you love uses it so much?
