Who doesn’t want to feel more joyful at home? Whether you’re battling winter doldrums or simply wishing for spring to arrive, the darker, colder months can be difficult. The good news is there are practical, uplifting actions you can take to brighten your home and your mood—not just in winter, but all year long.
As part of “My Year of Dwelling Well,” this post begins a three-step mini-series titled How to Find Joy at Home. These short, doable practices are meant to help you cultivate greater comfort, peace, and delight where you live.
I’ve written about the importance of how our homes affect our well-being. If you’d like deeper guidance, consider my book Dwelling and the Dwelling Well Journal for prompts and ideas to help you make intentional, joyful changes at home.
How to Find Joy at Home (A Simple Guide)
Create Your Happy Morning Routine
Start with Intentional Morning Solitude:
One of my favorite daily rituals, shared with me years ago by author Alexandra Stoddard, is “morning solitude.” Taking quiet time first thing sets a calm tone for the whole day. If you can, avoid reaching for your phone, the news, or social media upon waking. Even a few minutes of silence, prayer, or meditation helps you center yourself and feel grateful for the new day. When you begin with gratitude, your perspective shifts and your mood improves.
If needed, set your alarm a little earlier to carve out this space. Protect it as a regular self-care practice—those small minutes can change how you move through your day.

Surround Yourself With Happy Morning Sights, Sounds and Scents
Design your morning to lift all your senses. Small, intentional touches can create a gentle, joyful start.
A happy sight
Keep at least one pleasing visual ready for morning: a tidy bathroom counter, a polished sink, or fresh flowers on the table. Preparing a small, pleasant scene before you go to bed makes waking up feel easier and more inviting.
A happy sound
Music can transform mood quickly. Make an uplifting morning playlist you enjoy while you move through your routine. Choose songs that energize and inspire you for this season of life.
A happy scent
Scents and plants influence how we feel. Many people find that essential oils and natural aromas enhance morning energy and overall well-being. Pure plant-based oils can add a fresh, comforting dimension to your home routine and support healthy daily rhythms.

3 diffuser blends I recommend for a happy morning:
Cheerful Wake Up: 3 drops peppermint, 3 drops Stress Away, 2 drops lemon
Healthy Home: 4 drops Thieves, 3 drops citrus fresh
No Worries: 3 drops Valor, 3 drops Stress Away
How do you start your day—do you have a routine?
Create your own happy morning ritual, try including at least one soothing sight, one uplifting sound, and one pleasant scent, and see how it shifts your mood at home.
In the next post of this series we’ll focus on setting Three Intentions to cultivate a joyful daily mindset.

Joyful Action Steps:
1. Design and practice a simple morning routine that brings you happiness—test it for a week and notice any changes.
2. Share photos of your morning rituals and favorite corners of your home on social media if you like—tag or mention as you prefer.
3. If you’re exploring natural scents and diffusing, start with one reliable oil or blend that feels right for your household and add it to your routine.

Natural scents and simple routines can support sleep, mood, focus, and a sense of comfort in the home. Small, consistent practices—like a favorite diffuser blend, a curated playlist, or a dedicated quiet moment—add up to a more joyful daily life.
