Back when we planned our kitchen remodel, our goal was to add as much character as possible into the existing footprint. We weren’t opening walls or expanding the layout, so every change had to work within the space we already had.
One simple but effective choice was to soften two small doorways by converting their squared openings into graceful arches. That shift immediately lent a cottage, coastal charm that fits our home overlooking Puget Sound.
Our little galley kitchen originally had three doorways. In a compact kitchen that can feel like a lot, but each opening served a purpose, so they remained. Since we couldn’t enlarge the openings, we decided to make them deliberate design features instead.

The two interior arches complement other rounded elements throughout the home—our circular kitchen window, arched door moldings in other rooms, and even exterior gates—creating a cohesive, intentional look.

The exterior doorway on the left of the kitchen photo shifted from a utilitarian, almost prison-like feel to a friendlier aesthetic when we replaced it with a Dutch door. The new arch softens the transition between rooms and adds welcome personality.
Between the kitchen and the hall, we removed an unnecessary door and reshaped the opening into an arch. That change opened the small hall both visually and functionally—the arched top adds definition and charm without altering the footprint.

Adding two arches had an outsized impact on the kitchen, dining room and hallway. The spaces now feel more interesting, welcoming, and intentionally designed. The curved tops also create a perceived increase in height, which helps balance our cozy ceiling.
While some homeowners choose to remove arches in favor of squared openings, if you love arched doorways, know that converting a squared opening into an arch is a realistic option even in smaller homes.

The arches are a relatively simple modification with a big visual return. They tie multiple rooms together, enhance the coastal-cottage vibe, and make everyday spaces feel more special.
