There are countless ways to boost or refresh your home’s curb appeal, and window and railing planter boxes are one of my favorite additions. They add charm, texture and color to a façade, and best of all they work through every season. Oddly enough, I’ve never owned them myself, but I’ve always wanted them—so why not start now?

One of the things we immediately loved about our new home was its curb appeal. It already feels like a charming coastal cottage, so we didn’t have to begin from scratch. Still, personalizing a space and adding your own touches is something I enjoy, and this house has plenty of potential. Ideas are already flowing for ways to make it feel more like ours.

The previous owner had planter boxes on the porch railings, and I loved the look. The boxes needed replacing, so I picked out new porch railing and window planter boxes that hang securely over railings with included brackets.

I appreciate the classic style of these boxes—they feel substantial and well made. The supplied brackets are black, which looks nice, though we may paint them white to blend with our railing. As the plants fill in, the brackets become less noticeable anyway. Depending on your railing construction, you can hang the boxes directly on the rail or use the brackets. They’re versatile: you can mount them under windows, hang them on a porch railing, or simply set them on the ground or a porch floor.

These planter boxes are designed for easy care: they include a self-watering insert and a pre-drilled drainage hole. Each box measures 36 inches long by 11 inches high and 11 inches deep, and they’re available in black or gray. Built for outdoor use, they’re weather- and fade-resistant, so they hold up well over time.
TIP: If you want multiple boxes, buying a set can be more economical than purchasing single units.

We planted ours earlier in the summer, choosing hardy, easy-to-grow varieties for our first go. They’ve really taken off and are filling in nicely. It’s rewarding to see the porch come alive—those blooms bring a little daily joy.

Plants we used in each box:
Petunia Surfinia® Heavenly Blue
Bacopa MegaCopa® White
Green Gem Boxwood
Pineapple Variegated Mint

Over the next couple of months the annuals should fill in even more. When they begin to fade, we can swap out the annuals while keeping the boxwoods for year-round greenery. In winter, the boxes offer lots of decorating possibilities—evergreen boughs, twinkle lights, faux plants or seasonal ornaments all work well to maintain charm through the colder months.
