Today I’m sharing inspiration and practical notes about farmhouse sinks. These sinks — often called apron-front sinks — come in many shapes, sizes and materials and can suit a wide range of kitchen styles, not just traditional farmhouses.
This post is part of Kitchen Month at The Inspired Room, where I’ve been collecting favorite ideas and sources while planning my own kitchen remodel. If you enjoyed the open shelving ideas from last week, today’s focus on farmhouse and apron-front sinks will give you more design direction for a timeless, functional kitchen.

Many people use the terms farmhouse sink and apron-front sink interchangeably. Technically, an apron-front sink refers to the exposed front panel that overlaps the cabinet face, creating the farmhouse look. That finished front is the defining feature, but functionally the options are similar: deep basins, single- or double-bowl configurations, and durable materials suited to heavy use.

Installing an apron-front sink usually requires either a custom sink cabinet or modifying an existing one to accommodate the exposed front and the basin depth. These sinks are heavy, especially cast iron or fireclay models, so the cabinet must be sturdy and properly supported. Always check dimensions and review installation details with your contractor or cabinet maker before ordering.

One of the sinks I recommend is the Kohler Whitehaven, a cast-iron enameled apron-front sink available in several sizes. I’ve had a smaller-profile Whitehaven and loved the look and durability. It’s available as an undermount apron-front, which offers a clean transition from countertop to sink. Undermount options are popular for their seamless appearance and easier countertop cleaning.
Fireclay sinks are another beautiful option; I’ve used one previously and found it attractive and functional, though I preferred the cast-iron enameled finish of the Kohler in terms of feel and maintenance. You can also choose a large single-basin cast-iron undermount that sits entirely inside the cabinet rather than showing an exposed apron front — that offers the same deep basin benefits without the visible front panel.
