Spring Gardening Tips and an Invitation to a Seattle Garden Party

Whiskey Barrels for Planting Herbs and Veggies

I have an invite for locals to The Home Depot for a garden party at the end of this post so be sure to check it out!

I had a productive weekend getting a head start on projects in my backyard. Friends from church came over to help with winter cleanup and to prep the space where we plan to grow our vegetable and herb gardens. It’s a huge help to have people who are willing to jump in and work alongside you.

backyard gardening

This year our goal is to establish a simple, manageable garden. Our yard is very rocky, so raised and above-ground containers are the easiest option. Those containers also keep our dogs from trampling seedlings when they dart across the yard. We have a few planting ideas we’re excited to try. Container gardening feels less intimidating and much more approachable for getting started.

Whiskey Barrel Planters

I found cedar whiskey barrels at The Home Depot that are ideal for vegetable and herb containers. They’re versatile, attractive, and easy to tuck into small spots around the yard. Once everything is planted I’ll share what I chose, how I planted it, and updates as the plants grow. I didn’t spot these barrels online, so check your local store if you’re interested.

Spring Gardening

We brought home a variety of plants to experiment with this season.

Sweet Basil

Herbs are my go-to for container gardening — they’re useful in the kitchen and forgiving to grow. Last year we planted blueberries and tomatoes with good results.

Strawberry Plants

This year I’m expanding into strawberries, kale, several types of lettuce, and other vegetables. We try to eat organic whenever possible, and it’s exciting to imagine harvesting produce from our own yard. I’m surprised it’s taken me this long to plan a real vegetable garden, but it’s never too late to start something new.

gardening book ideas

Because we’ve had mixed success with houseplants, we bought a few gardening books last year to help avoid common mistakes. Those guides have been helpful for learning basic techniques and seasonal care.
