My small pantry under our staircase is one of the most organized rooms in our house!
I am thrilled that my pantry makeover is featured today on one of my favorite blogs. This compact pantry beside our kitchen has been one of my favorite spots in the house since we finished it about a year ago.
What keeps it tidy? Two simple things: first, I redesigned the space from top to bottom so I truly enjoy how it looks and functions; second, it’s open to an adjacent room and used frequently. Those factors make a big difference — when a space is attractive and on display, I’m far more motivated to maintain it.
Many people worry about open pantry shelving because they feel it exposes clutter. In my experience, an open layout encourages me to stay organized rather than hide messes behind a closed door. Being able to see the pantry daily makes me more intentional about where things go and how they’re stored.
Because this pantry meets both criteria — beautiful design and regular visibility — it stays orderly most of the time. The combination of thoughtful shelving, clear containers and labeled baskets helps keep items accessible and prevents overflow. I prioritize grouping like items together, keeping frequently used supplies at eye level, and tucking extras into labeled bins so everything has a place.
Small changes make a big difference in a compact space: adding a dedicated shelf for snacks, using stackable containers for dry goods, and placing heavier items on lower shelves creates a smooth, functional workflow. Lighting and a simple color palette also help the pantry feel calm and cohesive rather than chaotic.
If you’re planning a pantry refresh, start by decluttering — remove expired items and donate what you won’t use. Next, measure your shelves and choose containers that fit well. Invest in a few matching baskets or clear jars to visually unify the space. Finally, arrange items by category and frequency of use so everything is easy to find.
You can read the Q & A about this pantry and see the feature on the blog that inspired me. I’m grateful to be included and happy to share what’s worked for our small space!
