Kylee The Inspired Room

Hello! It’s been a while. I’m Kylee, Melissa’s oldest daughter. I always intend to pop in more often with updates about the townhouse, but life gets busy and I fall behind.

The easiest way to stay current with the townhouse is on Instagram. If it’s been some time since you’ve seen my posts or you’re new here, you can catch up on past updates on my blog archives.

Today I want to share the latest chapter in the red leather couch saga. The big news is that, seven months ago, Lance and I finally agreed on a new sofa. I stopped calling it a “couch” and upgraded to saying ~sofa~, which somehow feels more elegant. This living room has been evolving for years and will likely continue to change as we live in it.

We had a friend who needed couches, so we struck a deal: he helped us get the old ones out, and they were his. Removing them involved the same daring method we used to bring them in years ago — taking out the sliding door and lowering the couch over the balcony. Not pleasant, but effective. It was stressful and involved fewer helpers than before, but it was worth it. Our red couches now live at his place, and Lance can visit them anytime he wants.

Choosing a new sofa felt harder than it should have. After years with the large red pieces, I was eager for something fresh. Lance and I often have very different tastes in furniture, so compromise is essential — both of us have to live with the outcome.

After many months of deciding and even living without a sofa for a bit, we agreed on a sofa I love. The main compromise was color. I’m practical and would have chosen a darker tone to hide the wear and tear our dogs and Seattle weather can bring. Lance was surprisingly insistent on a light-colored sofa. We meet in the middle by using washable throws over the cushions most of the time. We’ve had the sofa about seven months now with no major issues so far.

We decided to keep just one sofa rather than replacing both. We didn’t want two matching pieces anymore and debated whether to add a second sofa in a different style or introduce chairs. For now, we’ve borrowed a few chairs from my mom while we consider options.

Picking art is one of the hardest choices for me. I like pieces that feel personal, and I often end up wanting them to mean something. For years I used wrapping paper as filler art in the frames above the sofa. Eventually I decided to paint my own pieces. They’re easy to change out later, which lets me avoid spending a lot of money on art that might not be the right fit.

I didn’t take many good photos of the dogs for this post, and I know everyone loves doodle pictures. So here’s a collage of Bella and Leo enjoying the new sofa. Most of these photos are from my Instagram, where they show up frequently — especially in stories — if you want to follow their antics.
