Christmas Display Shelf – House Log Holder
Some of you may have noticed the little stand on my counter recently. Since a few readers asked about it, I wanted to share the story behind the unexpected holiday accent.
Before Thanksgiving, while setting up a bit of Christmas decor, I found myself remembering how much I loved styling open shelves in our previous kitchen. Having display space made decorating for the holidays especially fun.
In this kitchen we chose not to install wall shelves, which I missed at first, but I also knew a freestanding unit could give me similar styling opportunities.
For months I scanned flea markets and stores looking for the right piece, but nothing felt quite right—until a little serendipity moment at Target.

You might recall the photo above. I used a similar nesting table on the counter years ago as a dessert stand and later in a bathroom—one of those small versatile pieces that keeps finding new life around the house. That simple repurposing inspired me to find a different, yet equally useful solution for this home.
Sadly, I think that original nesting table was left behind when we moved. I missed it, but the idea of a compact display surface stuck with me.

While shopping with my mom the week before Thanksgiving, I spotted a metal log holder in the Magnolia Hearth & Hand section at Target. I’d seen it online and liked it, but seeing it in person made me think of that nesting table again. The shape and open sides suggested a simple two-level display, perfect for a counter.

Of course, the log holder works beautifully by a fireplace or stacked with wood by an entryway, but I loved the idea of bringing it inside onto the counter as a seasonal styling piece. It felt a little odd at first—using a log holder as a display shelf—but that was part of the charm.
Weird? Maybe. But why not?
I have a habit of looking beyond an item’s intended use, and this was one of those times where reimagining something ordinary felt right. It’s not permanent, but for now it creates a cheerful little vignette that makes the kitchen feel festive.

The styling was simple: a runner underneath, a couple of seasonal canisters, a French press, mugs, and a few decorative accents tucked into the openings. The log holder’s shape gave me an instant two-level display that’s visually interesting without taking up much space.

I kind of love it.

It also makes a delightful little coffee or hot chocolate station for the season—easy to use and easy to enjoy.

Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to be complicated to feel special. A small, well-considered display can transform a corner of your home and make everyday moments feel a bit more magical.
And isn’t that exactly how Christmas should feel?
