From Move-In Day to Today: How to Make Your House Truly Feel Like Home

Move in day! We gave our home simple updates in the first year that really made it feel like our own.

It’s always rewarding to watch rooms evolve. Little updates over time are how a house becomes a home. My daughter Kylee shares the changes she made to her kitchen and dining area during the first year after moving in — from the very first day to how it looks today.

We moved into our house almost a year ago, and were fortunate the kitchen had already been remodeled; most of our work was styling and adding personality rather than major renovations. I wrote a post about styling the glass-front cabinet soon after we moved in, and I’ve continued to make a few more updates since then.

Simple updates that make a house feel like home

One of the first changes we made was swapping the original light fixture for a globe pendant. The previous fixture’s clear shade trapped insects and was hard to clean; the globe provides a soft, warm glow in the evenings and feels much more inviting.

We also added a lined woven bamboo shade above the sink. It introduces texture and style while offering practical sun control and privacy. We upgraded to a motorized version so it raises and lowers with a button — a small convenience that makes daily life easier.

Some of the smaller touches are sentimental. The teacup art prints on display belonged to my grandmother; she and my grandfather bought them early in their marriage, and it felt special to give them a place in our kitchen.

On the counter we keep a stainless-steel water filter, which has been a noticeable upgrade in taste compared to typical pitchers. It removes impurities and consistently provides better-tasting water, which we appreciate every day.

Display items that make the space yours

My husband gave me a marble pestle and mortar for Christmas. It’s both beautiful and functional — a piece that feels heirloom-worthy and looks lovely on display. It’s those kinds of keepsakes that add character.

We also switched our dinnerware after many years. We used square dishes that we loved for nearly 14 years, but I’d always wanted round plates. We found a set we adore and enjoy displaying them in the glass-front cabinet. Filling the new home with your own things takes time, but it’s fun and rewarding to see the collection grow.

Make the space welcoming and inviting

A subtle but impactful change was replacing the chandelier bulbs. The new bulbs create a softer, more welcoming light. I tested several bulb styles and even tried patterned lampshades, but ultimately preferred bulbs that give a gentle glow. They don’t emit a lot of brightness, so it’s wise to have additional lighting available when you need more illumination.

We also added stools at the island that fit the compact layout and matched the aesthetic. They were an affordable find that worked well in the space. Plaid, lined, room-darkening curtains added softness to the dining area and improved privacy and light control. Some of the dining furniture is familiar from family pieces, which makes the room feel cozy and lived-in.

Looking back over the first year, it’s gratifying to see how a few thoughtful changes — new lighting, textiles, a few special pieces, and practical upgrades — transformed the kitchen and dining area into a place that feels like our own. Creating a home happens over time, and every small decision helps shape the space into something welcoming and personal.
