DIY Jewelry Storage via Whippy Cake
Along with the craft closet we are planning for our guest bedroom, we’re ready to tackle our master bedroom closet this year. I’m really excited about the project. My small walk-in closet works but lacks personality and function, so I’ve begun gathering inspiration to shape what I want to do and make the space more useful and inviting.
Here are seven creative ideas for master closet storage that I plan to use:
1. Add charm and personality.
I respond best to organized spaces that feel personal and lively rather than plain and clinical. If a space has character, I’m far more motivated to keep it tidy. A jewelry board, for example, is both practical and decorative — it organizes pieces while making an attractive statement on the wall. Creating a charming closet on a budget will go a long way toward keeping the space functional and enjoyable.

2. Tuck creative storage into small spaces.
Small, narrow drawers and compact drawer systems are ideal for accessories and odd corners. Items like scarves, belts, and jewelry fit neatly into shallow drawers or stacked units, converting awkward gaps into efficient storage. I’ll be looking for smart, space-saving pieces—IKEA and similar stores often have affordable options—to maximize every inch of my closet.

3. Organize and contain items by activity.
I work best when I can quickly grab everything I need for a specific activity. I keep tote bags ready with books, notebooks, or quiet-time items so I can take them wherever I go. In the closet, hooks and labeled baskets for “on the go” items, bedtime essentials like slippers and robes, or even workout gear help streamline routines. Grouping items by how you use them makes mornings and evenings simpler and keeps clutter under control.

4. Use other rooms for supplemental storage.
When one closet isn’t enough, spread storage across nearby rooms. A dresser used as a nightstand can hold folded clothes, while baskets with lids tucked into bathrooms, bedrooms, or hallways provide discreet overflow storage. Thinking holistically about the home allows you to distribute items logically and avoid cramming everything into a single closet.

5. Hooks, hooks and more hooks.
Hooks are one of the simplest, most versatile storage tools. Install them wherever you can—on walls, the back of doors, or inside cubbies—to hang jewelry, scarves, belts, and bags. They make use of vertical space, keep items visible, and can also add a decorative touch when arranged thoughtfully.

6. Think beyond standard wire shelving.
While wire shelving is practical and common, it isn’t the only option. Consider repurposed furniture like a small bookshelf to store purses and totes, vintage cabinets for folded items, or freestanding cubbies for shoes. Choosing unique or eclectic storage solutions not only increases function but also adds character to the closet, making it feel like a curated part of your home rather than a utilitarian afterthought.

7. Consider freestanding closets and armoires.
Freestanding closet units and armoires are excellent when built-in closet space is limited. They’re flexible, moveable, and come in a range of sizes and styles to suit different needs. We’ve used freestanding units for children’s clothes, craft storage, and extra coats. An armoire can also serve as a hidden storage hub for items you don’t want on display. These options expand your storage footprint without major remodeling.
We also have a large armoire in our bedroom that offers additional capacity, and it will be part of the overall plan. I enjoy finding creative organizational solutions, so I’m eager to put these ideas to work and transform the closet into a functional, beautiful space.
