This Monday Mood Board is all about the snug — a small, cozy space designed for comfort and calm. A snug is where you curl up with a book, enjoy a quiet morning with tea, or sink into soft layers on a chilly evening. If you want to see an example of a real-life snug, check the post I previously wrote about preparing our own snug for winter.
A snug is simply a cozy corner with soft, comfortable furnishings — an ideal spot for relaxing, especially in colder months.
Texture is the design secret I turn to again and again, and it’s particularly important when creating a snug. Layered textures make a small space feel inviting and full of depth.
In today’s mood board you’ll find many complementary textures working together. Examples include:
A cotton or denim fabric paired with a plush velvet ottoman; a chunky wicker trunk beside smooth leather accented with nailhead trim; an assortment of throw pillows in varied weaves combined with a soft plaid blanket finished with fringe. The rug shows a distressed pattern that adds visual movement, while a rattan lamp sits alongside a metal reading lamp and brass window candles for mixed-metal interest.
One of the best parts of making a snug is that perfect matching isn’t required. Use what you already own—mix and match textures and soft pieces to create warmth. Add layered lighting, such as a reading lamp and candles, to make the space glow. If you can imagine yourself curled up there on a winter afternoon, cozy and content, then you’ve succeeded in creating a snug.

Slope arm slipcovered sofa – This was the sofa in my previous home; the extra-deep version feels almost like a twin bed and makes a great multi-purpose seating and guest option.
Leather arm chair – A classic, durable choice that anchors the room with a warm, lived-in look.
Round tufted ottoman – Adds a plush surface for resting feet or acting as an informal coffee table.
Patterned rug – A distressed pattern brings subtle movement and depth to the floor.
Oversized stripe throw pillow – A bold but cozy accent that helps tie together colors and patterns.
Brass window candles (battery-operated) – Provide soft, ambient light and a touch of classic warmth.
Plaid/stripe reversible throw pillow – Versatile and layered for seasonal switching.
Basket weave knit throw pillow – Adds tactile interest and softness.
Blue and white planter with preserved boxwood – A simple, low-maintenance touch of greenery to brighten the snug.
Wicker storage trunk – Useful for storing extra bedding or pillows and adds natural texture.
Wool plaid throw blanket – Cozy, insulating, and perfect for draping over a chair or sofa.
Brass floor reading lamp – Provides targeted light for reading and a warm metal accent.
Mini rattan accent lamp – A small, affordable source of soft light and texture.
