Lake House Style Inspiration: Coastal-Cottage Decor Ideas

Summer Living RoomLauren Liess

Lake houses always feel like summer to me. I grew up near—and sometimes in—a home on the water, and that connection with lakes shaped the way I imagine relaxed, sunlit interiors. Even my previous home sat right next to a lake, so it’s no surprise I often daydream about the calm, casual aesthetic of a lakeside retreat.

I’m working on bringing some of those lake-house influences into our current home, even though we actually look out over the sound rather than a lake. Whether you call it “lake house” or “water house” style, the appeal is the same: an easy, inviting mix of natural textures, soft colors, and classic, comfortable pieces that welcome long summer days and slow evenings.

Since summer is officially here, I rounded up rooms that capture that lakeside mood—spaces that inspire regardless of where you live. Think breezy linens, light woods, striped rugs, and playful accents that keep things fresh and relaxed. At the bottom of the post there’s also a curated shopping strip so you can bring these ideas into your own home.

Enjoy the inspiration, and happy Friday!

These rooms show how subtle color palettes, natural materials, and well-chosen patterns create that relaxed, lakeside feeling. A striped rug grounds a bright living room, soft blue built-ins keep a mudroom serene, and playful wallpaper can turn a small powder room into a memorable space. The goal is comfortable, timeless design—spaces that feel lived-in and welcoming, perfect for summer gatherings or quiet mornings with coffee.

If you’d like to bring this look into your home, focus on a few simple moves: introduce light, breathable textiles; add natural wood or woven elements; select a restrained color palette with touches of soft blue, sandy beige, and crisp white; and use stripes or gentle patterns to add visual interest without overwhelming the space.
