Rug shopping can feel overwhelming. There are countless retailers, styles, colors, and materials to consider, and returning rugs isn’t always easy. If you get paralyzed by too many choices, you’re not alone—I often rely on trusted recommendations or photos of rugs in real homes to help me decide.
Because readers ask about the rugs in my home so often, I put together a collection of rugs we’ve owned or used in our house and my daughters’ homes over recent years. Below you’ll find photos of the rugs with the sources I could still find available.
I’m skipping vintage rugs for now; that can be a separate post. Here I’m focusing on new rugs and styles that are currently available. I also share a few extra favorites at the end.
Places I’ve Bought New Rugs:
- Pottery Barn
- Overstock
- Walmart
- Dash & Albert / Annie Selke
- Ruggable (machine washable)
- Amazon
- Wayfair
- World Market
- Rugs USA
- Target
Other good sources include Ballard Designs, Birch Lane, Lulu & Georgia, Urban Outfitters, Joss & Main, H&M Home, and Rifle Paper Co. I’ll add more recommendations as I think of them.

Tips for Choosing Rugs:
Rugs add texture, warmth, and personality to a room. You can choose a neutral, natural-fiber rug for subtle texture that doesn’t compete with other elements, or pick a colorful or patterned rug to make a statement.
Runners are great for hallways and in front of sinks: they’re affordable, add softness, and are easy to move between rooms. Small rugs work well layered by an entry or in a powder room. If you like to change looks frequently, layer a smaller rug atop a larger textured rug so you can swap the top piece without replacing the whole floor covering.
For living rooms, larger rugs usually work best to anchor the seating area. Aim for at least the front legs of sofas and chairs to rest on the rug so the space feels cohesive. That said, every room is different—consider your layout, traffic paths, door clearances, and furniture arrangement. If you have pets, washable rugs or indoor-outdoor options can make maintenance much easier.
Rugs We Have:

The rug above is a cushioned “comfort” rug with a non-slip backing—ideal at the kitchen sink. It wipes clean easily and is machine washable. We bought both sizes and used the smaller one by our door. If you want similar options in different patterns, there are solid textured and striped versions available as well.
