The Business of Blogging
I receive many questions from people who are curious about starting a blog to promote their business or to share their passion for decorating. Blogging appeals to people who want to earn income, increase exposure, or simply connect with an audience that appreciates their style. Over the years I’ve talked with readers online, at events, on planes and around town about the realities of building a blog-based business.
My journey began as a decorator, long before I launched a blog. I created the blog to expand my reach and attract decorating clients. At the time I had no idea how influential a blog could become. I hoped it would generate a few inquiries, but in the early days of blogging few of us understood the full potential of the medium. The impact has been remarkable.
Since those early days my business has grown in ways I never anticipated. Blogging has become more than a marketing tool — it has shaped my career, opened doors to unexpected opportunities, and connected me with brands and people I admire. The work is creative and fulfilling, and it has pushed me to learn, travel, and collaborate on projects that continue to expand my business.
What’s not to love? It has been a truly rewarding experience so far.

But is blogging the right choice for everyone?
Recently I was invited by Williams-Sonoma, Inc. Designer Marketplace to write a series about the business side of design. My first piece for them addresses a question many designers ask: “Should I start a design blog?” The article outlines practical considerations and realistic expectations for anyone thinking about blogging, whether you’re a designer, maker, or hobbyist.
I’m honored to contribute to Williams-Sonoma’s Designer Marketplace and to share what I’ve learned.
Do you have a blog? Have you thought about starting one? Or, if you already blog, what has your experience been?
Read the article, then come back and tell me what you think about blogging.
PS. If you’re just starting a blog — or launching a second or third site — there are helpful resources that make the first steps easier. One that many bloggers recommend is ProBlogger’s short guide to planting strong foundations in that crucial first week. I found their approach practical and focused on habits that work.
If I were starting over, I would use the tips in that guide to set the blog up for success.
