Has it been a while since you refreshed your master bedroom? Autumn is the perfect season to make the space cozier. I love spending cold winter mornings in bed, so updating the bedroom is high on my list this time of year.

Since we moved in, my bedding—while still high quality—has stayed the same for almost eight years. It’s neutral and classic, but after so long I’m ready for a fresh look. I haven’t touched the room since we moved, so a simple makeover feels overdue.
Sometimes all it takes is a new color, a playful lamp, or a patterned pillow to make the room feel alive again. Small changes can create a big emotional lift when you walk in.

Walking into a room should spark a small burst of joy. If my bedroom makes me smile, I feel peaceful and inspired. If I find myself thinking “meh,” that’s my cue to make a change—swap a throw pillow, add a new lamp, or tweak the color palette until the room elicits a positive reaction.

Here’s a little decorating confession: I have a habit of walking down the hall and quickly peeking back into a room to check my reaction. If I smile, I’m satisfied. If I grimace or feel indifferent, I know something needs to change right away.

If a room doesn’t make me smile, I change something and peek again. If it still doesn’t feel right, I try another adjustment until it does. Call it a quirky method, but it works for me and keeps the house feeling intentional and welcoming.

How to refresh a room in three easy steps—the Inspired Room way
Step one. Walk down the hall casually, looking around without focusing on anything in particular.
Step two. When you pass a room, do a quick double take back into the space. Take note of your immediate reaction.
Step three. Ask yourself: did what you saw make you feel calm, happy, and inspired? If yes, move on contentedly. If your response was “meh,” change something in the room until your reaction improves. Repeat these steps until each room makes you smile.
The end.
It really is that simple. That impulse check helps me keep rooms feeling right for the season and the moment.
Autumn is the best time to create a cozy nest to curl up in.
Have you done any double takes lately?
