Happy Thanksgiving weekend, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying shopping, decorating, and plenty of turkey sandwiches. When I last updated you on the hardwood floor project, the new wood had been delivered and was acclimating in our home while the crew removed old carpet and damaged boards to prepare for installation. That was an exciting step.
Last week the installers spent several days putting in our new Hickory flooring from Mohawk. It was a hectic week—our car broke down with a costly repair bill, I had back-to-back meetings, and multiple contractors were at the house—but the flooring crew was so professional and capable that I could step in and out without worry. Every time I checked in, more of the floor was finished and the space looked better and better.
Watching the progress was rewarding; the new floors really are transforming the rooms.
Winston thought the work zone made a perfect napping spot and slept right through it—despite being in the way. In that photo you can even see holes in the subfloor where the old counters used to be. It’s exciting to remove those scars from past renovations and see a kitchen that finally feels cohesive and complete.
The photo also shows my still-unfinished kitchen cabinets; they remain unpainted after some unfortunate experiences with painters. A few no-shows and one difficult contractor have delayed that final step, so I haven’t been able to share the official “after” post yet. Painting is the last major task remaining, and finishing the floors was the final big piece before that—so we are very close to being done. I promise there will be an after post when everything is complete.
I’m delighted with the Hickory floors. The grain and finish are beautiful, even under remodeling dust. Removing the stained, smelly carpet from the adjoining family room and extending the wood through the main level has opened up the space and created a continuous flow that makes the house feel larger and brighter. The Hickory adds warmth and character that suits the home wonderfully.
I can’t wait to share the final reveal. It’s still a little surreal to see the house coming together—I’m thrilled with the results so far. Tackling a last-minute improvement before the holidays may be chaotic, but having new floors makes me even more excited for Christmas decorating.
Do you tackle projects or remodel during the holidays like I do?

I partnered with the Mohawk “Floors Me, as Told by Bloggers” program and received hardwood flooring as part of the project. As always, all opinions, experiences, and home projects are my own.
