Do you feel the winter blues? January can be a challenge—short, gray days and cold, damp weather make it hard to stay upbeat. Living in our coastal corner of the Pacific Northwest isn’t as harsh as winters in other parts of the country, and I’m grateful for that, but we still get more gray, chilly, and rainy days than I’d prefer.

Long stretches of dark, cold weather can drag down your mood — and they’re even worse when you’re frequently catching colds. One of the most effective, consistent practices we’ve adopted to support health and lift the atmosphere at home is diffusing high-quality essential oils.

I was a skeptic at first. Essential oils sounded a bit “out there.” Over time I learned they can make a meaningful difference.

Nearly ten years ago we shifted our focus to prevention and immune support after a particularly rough winter. I started adding pure essential oils to our daily routines, and that change made a big difference for our family.

Winter wellness essential oils and diffusing

My husband used to suffer from recurring sinus infections every year from fall through spring. He tried everything—diet changes, antibiotics, saline rinses, repeated doctor visits—yet nothing stopped the cycle. After growing exhausted with conventional approaches he agreed to try essential oils, skeptical but willing. The results surprised us both.

Since starting a simple routine with essential oils, he stopped getting sinus infections. It’s been a game changer.

When it comes to using oils for health, quality matters. We only use pure botanical oils without fillers, preservatives, or additives. That consistency and confidence in quality is why we’ve stuck with the same brand for years.

Thieves Essential Oil

Using oils is straightforward. For sinus support, my husband would place a few drops of Thieves essential oil in his palms, cup his hands, and breathe deeply. He followed that breathing routine daily for a long while and now returns to it whenever he feels he needs extra support.

We keep Thieves on hand and sometimes apply a bit to the soles of our feet for general wellness. It may sound unusual, but it’s an easy, effective ritual. There’s also a convenient roll-on version if you prefer.

Over the years the whole family has had small, surprising wins with oils—better sleep, calmer moods, digestive support—turning many of us from skeptics into believers. Beyond practical wellness, the aromatic benefits of essential oils can genuinely lift spirits and create a comforting home atmosphere.

Mood-Lifting Blends

I used to buy seasonal room sprays and scented products until I realized many commercially scented items can be harmful—especially for those with autoimmune conditions like Hashimoto’s. Diffusing pure plant oils is a safer, more natural way to bring seasonal fragrance into the home. One favorite for this time of year is a Volcano candle–inspired diffuser blend my daughters and I developed. After testing different combinations side‑by‑side with a Volcano candle, we settled on a bright, uplifting blend full of citrus and spruce—both known for their mood-enhancing properties.

If you don’t already have a diffuser, it’s a worthwhile addition for every season. Diffusing is pleasant, economical over time, and an easy way to change the mood of a room. I began diffusing after learning that some scented candles can emit toxins; switching to pure essential oils felt like a healthy upgrade.

My favorite essential oils for winter
Anthropologie Volcano Diffuser Blend

Anthropologie Volcano Candle Diffuser Blend

– 5 drops lemon essential oil
– 5 drops lime essential oil
– 3 drops orange essential oil
– 2 drops grapefruit essential oil
– 2 drops northern lights black spruce essential oil
– 1 drop bergamot essential oil

These measurements work well in a large diffuser; adjust amounts to suit your diffuser size and scent preferences. The blend also makes a lovely room spray—double the recipe and mix in a 2 oz spray bottle filled with water for an easy, refreshing mist.

Give plant oils time and you may find yourself craving their fresh, natural scents. Diffusing pure essential oils can evoke the calm of a forest walk and help you avoid synthetic fragrances entirely.
