Last week I added a beautiful statement rug and swapped out the chair legs in our bedroom.

I had planned to just work on the deck this summer, but inspiration struck and the bedroom got my attention instead.

Now I’m decorating the bedroom—and I always reserve the right to change my mind.

That’s how creativity works: stay open and flexible, because you never know when an idea will hit.

What’s that saying? If you give a mouse a cookie… well, I do love cookies.

Our new rug style is on sale in some sizes right now. There are also deals on a few rugs I love, and Prime Day is always a great time to shop for rugs—if you’re in the market, it’s worth a look.

Decorating becomes more exciting once you have a standout piece to build around.

Below I share my thoughts on the new rug, some decorating tips, and what I’m considering next.

Our new bed brought a whimsical, fresh coastal-cottage vibe to the room, and the rug feels like the perfect match.

I wasn’t certain when I ordered the rug whether it would stay in this room, but it has settled in and I’ve fallen for it here.

It even features coastal birds in the pattern—the moment I noticed them, I knew it was right for the room.

We’ll probably repaint and rearrange the art at some point, but I’ll always love these bird motifs.

A room should tell stories and reflect the things you love—don’t hesitate to bring in what sparks joy.

Do you ever make up stories about the art in your home? I do.

We have real herons by the water, so when I see bird art I imagine they’re heading out to join their friends—which always makes me smile.

Here are a few decorating tips and thoughts…

A colorful statement piece—like a rug—can be a fantastic starting point for a room’s palette and style choices.

Take your time experimenting with combinations until you find what works best for your space.

I love the pattern and colors in this rug. Screens can shift tones, but I see denim-like blues, warm browns, goldy-yellows, and a soft touch of mauve or pink.

The colors would also work well with another rug I have, so the piece is flexible if I decide to move it to a different room later.

Even as a statement rug, it coordinates with other rugs in the house, which adds versatility.

I’m planning to try several bedding combinations with the rug and will share updates as I decide.

It’s tempting to play it safe, but choosing something you truly love can define the whole room.

Small changes can refresh a chair.

After the rug was in place, I remembered the new chair legs I bought months ago. Swapping the legs gave this longtime chair an instant, fresher vibe that fits the room.

Curtain panels

We bought checked chambray-colored curtains and acrylic-and-brass rods a couple of years ago and still love them. They were affordable enough that I feel free to change them when I want a new look.

We need new shades on our French doors, so I’m searching for the right option.

Furniture and lighting

We almost moved this chair downstairs, but our pup Lily loves it in the bedroom and often sleeps there. I move furniture frequently, and she adapts—what matters to her is a cozy spot.

We recently installed a wood bead ceiling light fixture and still love it. I’m also considering table lamps and a floor lamp and will plan those based on space and need.

Make changes over time.

We brought a white bookcase from our previous house; we could paint it or leave it as is. The walls need repainting, but those updates will come in time. I’m on the lookout for nightstands and possibly a new dresser, but I prefer to wait until I find the right pieces.

We’re loving the small deck right outside our room; it’s become an extension of our sanctuary.

Having the deck and French doors fulfills a long-held dream of creating a peaceful primary bedroom with outdoor access.

Moving here turned that dream into reality, and we’re grateful for this comfortable, peaceful space.
