When we moved to Seattle last fall, our top priority was simple: more family time. We expected some remodeling would be necessary, but the location and existing features of this house promised that family togetherness would naturally become a part of daily life.
One of our favorite parts of this home is the backyard. It feels like a park, with wide open space where the dogs can run and plenty of room for family gatherings. We’re looking forward to summer evenings spent outside in this new space.
We’re excited to create distinct areas to relax so that on warm nights we can leave devices indoors and enjoy face-to-face time together.
Although I miss our old garden and gravel patio with a fire pit, this yard already has a strong head start: mature plants and privacy. It’s close to family and offers many spots for gardening and personal touches. I know it will be even more special for our family.
Our dream includes a cool croquet set, a couple of big hammocks, and arranging patio furniture for long summer gatherings. With the first bit of sunshine this spring, we set up a small seating area using our old bench, Adirondack chairs, and a secondhand teak cart that’s perfect for entertaining. It already feels cozy and welcoming.
The single most important thing that makes a backyard—or any space—feel inviting is ambience. Good lighting sets the mood. Proper light transforms an ordinary outdoor area into a destination you’ll want to use evening after evening.
