Layering Bedding – BHG
Now and then I let myself imagine a future bedroom makeover. I haven’t touched my bedroom in this house — not even a fresh coat of paint. Life and other projects, like finishing my office, have taken priority, but I keep dreaming about changes I want to make.

Although it still feels like a distant idea, my bedroom really is a space I need to address soon — for my own well-being. Bedrooms are essential: they are where we rest, recharge, and escape the day. A bedroom should feel calming and welcoming, not like a place you want to flee.

The truth is I don’t like my room at all. The carpet is worn and stained from years of pets, and I’m ready to tear it out and start over. This is one of those projects that can’t be postponed much longer.

Besides replacing the flooring, I’m excited about updating my bedding. My current set has been with me for about 12 years — time really does fly — and while it’s held up well, I’m ready for a fresh look. The white matelassé coverlet I chose years ago is timeless and well made, so it still looks good, but I want something new that reflects where I am now.

Ideally the makeover will begin with new flooring and then flow into updated bedding and accessories. It’s often a domino effect: one change leads to another, and before long the whole room feels transformed.

I enjoy planning and imagining the final result even when I can’t start right away. Thinking through ideas helps me clarify what I want and avoids hasty decisions once the project begins.
One style I’m always drawn to is a layered bed. Mixing patterns and textures adds personality and depth, and the informal layering keeps a bed from feeling too stiff. I prefer a relaxed, lived-in look rather than something overly formal, so layers suit my taste perfectly.

I recently fell for a layered bedding display at West Elm. It was the reminder I needed that I want to update my bedroom — shopping can be dangerous for anyone trying to resist change!
So how about you? Is your bedroom just the way you want it?
If time and money were no object, what would you change?
