It’s a true Christmas miracle—the kitchen has finally been painted. After nearly six months of work, this stage of the remodel is complete and I couldn’t be more excited.
I was so eager to see the progress that I slipped into the kitchen after dark to take these photos. The doorways were taped with plastic and paper, so we crept in quickly and quietly, trying not to disturb anything. Even though the paint was likely dry, I was being extra cautious—no fingerprints on the cabinets, please!
We hadn’t been inside long when we heard a crash at the other doorway. Jack, our determined goldendoodle, was clawing through the taped plastic to poke his head in. We tried to keep him out—pushing his head back through the plastic, then watching him try again. Eventually we had to barricade the opening with chairs and tell him he’d have to wait. No dog prints allowed on the fresh paint.
It was heartbreaking for him, but the kitchen needed to stay pristine.
These are late-night iPhone photos, so the image quality isn’t great and the plastic and paper obscure much of the detail. Also, the cabinets may look black in these shots, but they are not actually that dark in person.
Despite the limited view, it was fun to get a sneak peek at the transformation. The finishes and paint look even better in real life than in photos, and I can’t wait to share clearer shots once all the protective coverings are removed.
The painting project extends through the kitchen and the family room, covering trim, walls, and ceilings. The color and finish are stunning in person—so much so that I’m tempted to never paint trim myself again. Once the paper and tape are gone I’ll share full photos so you can see the new look clearly.
Although the painting did push back some of my Christmas decorating plans, I’m thrilled this phase is finished. A big thank-you to a reader who recommended painters who were able to fit the job in right before the holidays.
Soon we’ll be able to hang stockings by the chimney and finish our holiday decor—just in time for Christmas.
One more update: I can’t wait to install the new hardware. I picked up bin pulls for the drawers during a sale, and plan to use a mix of gold and mercury glass knobs on the cabinets. They’ve been waiting in a box for a while and I’m excited to see how they complete the look.
We’re getting close to the finishing touches, and I’m eager to see everything come together in the kitchen and family room.
