Last week we enjoyed a family staycation to celebrate Father’s Day and my son’s birthday. One evening we turned our backyard firepit into a simple, memorable s’mores night. I love gatherings that are easy, meaningful, and fun—so much so that I wrote a book called Simple Gatherings to share ideas like this.
For our s’mores night we used extendable roasting sticks that were a big hit. They lengthen so you can keep hands away from the flames and collapse back down for compact storage. I also ordered a grilling basket for future firepit nights; it’s great for keeping small or odd-shaped items contained over the flame and opens up more cooking possibilities.
Tips for hosting an easy, enjoyable s’mores night
- Gather supplies ahead of time: graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate, roasting sticks, a grilling basket if desired, plates and napkins.
- Offer mix-and-match options. Traditional s’mores (graham crackers, marshmallow, chocolate) are delicious, but adding berries, banana slices, jams, nut butters, caramel, different candies, waffles, cookies, or even savory items like cheese, cured meats, chutneys, crackers, and bread makes the experience more interactive and fun.
- Include alternatives for dietary needs. If you’ll have vegans attending, provide vegan marshmallows so everyone can join in.
- Set out a tray with the s’more components in small bowls or dishes so guests can assemble easily.
- Provide a stable surface for assembling s’mores and enough plates for guests.
- Arrange comfortable seating—chairs, benches or cushions—so people can relax around the fire.
- Create a festive atmosphere with outdoor music played from a Bluetooth speaker and soft lighting like string lights around the seating area for a cozy, magical feel.
