Two Key Tips for Choosing the Right Home Accessories

Gray and White Striped Entry Wall - Entry Console Table - The Inspired Room

HHello friends! I took a few days off to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family. It was lovely to slow down, relax, and savor delicious food. My 24-pound turkey was perfectly browned, juicy, and reached the ideal temperature in just a few hours—total success.

Even though I enjoyed the break, I missed catching up here with you all. I’m thrilled December is here and I’m ready to dive into Christmas decorating and all the festive posts ahead. I didn’t quite finish the final days of my Loving Fall series—family time took priority—so we may pick that back up next year. I love fall plenty, but for now it’s time for holiday cheer.

Quick heads-up: you’re all invited to a virtual Christmas tour next Monday. I’d better get busy! I’m planning to queue up Charlie Brown and deck the halls.

With the season of sales underway, I wanted to share a few practical tips for shopping for home accessories. If you have limited storage and a tight budget, you can’t buy every tempting item. Making smart choices helps you avoid clutter and get more use from what you do bring home. Below are two questions I use to decide whether something is worth buying.

Two questions I ask before buying home decor:

1. Is this item season-less?

I prefer pieces that work year-round. I don’t have space—or patience—to store lots of decor, so items that can be adapted for holidays and everyday living are winners. Swap candles, change textiles, or add small accents to shift the mood for the season without storing bulky items.

These wood candlesticks, for example, are great any time of year—switch the candle colors to suit the season and they instantly feel new. Candlesticks are a versatile, long-lasting investment.

Wood Starburst Mirror - The Inspired Room

2. Could this item work in more than one room?

When I bought a rustic wood starburst mirror I originally planned to hang it in the laundry room. On the way, I realized it would also complement my rustic Christmas decor perfectly. Versatile pieces that move around the home are smarter buys—they stretch your decorating budget and reduce the need for single-purpose items.

Choosing items that are both season-less and multi-functional makes it easier to say yes to pieces you love and pass on those you don’t need.

That said, I still enjoy seasonal decor and keep a shelf in the garage for favorites I bring out each year. Rotating a few cherished seasonal items alongside your everyday basics keeps the home feeling fresh without overwhelming storage.
