Whimsical and Tasteful Children’s Room Ideas for Inspired Spaces

I don’t usually browse HGTV.com, but today I found myself completely captivated by their feature on children’s rooms. It was a pleasant surprise — far more inspiring than some of the design shows. The rooms are charming, thoughtfully designed, and packed with ideas that balance playfulness with good taste.

I initially intended to write a little rant about “rate my space” culture, but the kids’ room gallery pulled me in. There are so many creative solutions and practical tips that I could have spent hours exploring. If you’ve ever felt unsure about where to find solid design inspiration for family spaces, HGTV’s collection is a great resource.

Regular readers know I’m not a fan of overly themed or gimmicky rooms. I’ve written before about preferring more timeless choices over loud, character-driven décor for children. That said, every family should do what feels right for them — what matters most is that a room reflects the child’s personality and brings them joy.

As a parent, I can admit I’d cave if my child really wanted something like a giant Spiderman chair. Fortunately my son shares my taste for well-designed spaces, so we haven’t had to make that compromise. But I appreciate that many parents will embrace bolder themes, and when done thoughtfully those rooms can still be beautiful and functional.

My personal preference is to create rooms that feel timeless yet whimsical — spaces that nurture imagination without relying on passing trends. When you combine enduring style with playful touches, you create a room that both parents and children can enjoy for years. Simple color palettes, classic furniture, and a few imaginative details are often all you need to make a space feel magical.

For this post I’m sharing several photos I added to my “LOVE THAT” file for kids’ rooms. Many of these images were featured on HGTV, and I’m grateful they made them available. They offer great examples of how to strike a balance between fun and refined design.

Credits: These rooms are featured on HGTV.com. Several were designed by Candace Olsen. One image is credited to a designer with the last name Saul; I couldn’t relocate every original credit while browsing. If I identify additional designers, I will update credits. There is a wealth of inspiring work on the site, which made it easy to lose track while exploring.
