Fourth of July Project Rush: Managing a Flood of Tasks

Porch in progress

At my house, when it rains it pours.

And I’m not talking only about the persistent July drizzle (yes, I live in Seattle and we’ve had our share of rain). I’m talking about the flood of projects I’ve taken on lately.

Recently I felt overwhelmed by my to‑do list—not the fun kind, but the growing list of things I’d rather put off. So I gave myself a mini break and tackled some house projects that feel more like therapy than chores. Working on projects lifts my mood; it’s my version of a spa day. And when I get into that zone, it really pours—one project leads to another and I get delightfully carried away.

I’ve made good progress on the porch: I added plants, finally hung curtains I’ve been saving for a year, and brought in a few more accessories. I also returned to a cabinet I started ages ago, and I began work on a mirror I’ve meant to refresh for about ten years. I tend to move slowly and work on many things at once—call it decorating attention deficit—but I do see steady progress in lots of places, and that little bit of forward motion makes me happy.

Early paint on the mirror

The mirror photo (admittedly not the best) shows the very first swipes of color. I began with a soft gray/taupe neutral that I really like. It will get a few more layers of paint and some sanding to reveal a subtle layered finish. I can’t believe it took me a decade to finally paint this—its original dark brown stain always bothered me. Better late than never!

More progress on the cabinet!

I’ll share full updates on all the projects soon, but in the meantime I wanted to highlight some inspiring finds from blogland that I’ve been collecting in my Inspiring Finds tumblr. Lately there have been lots of cute Fourth of July crafts, tasty recipes, and clever decorating ideas. One standout was an incredible chicken coop so beautifully designed I joked I’d happily live in it myself. It’s that impressive.

Also, don’t miss the creative link-ups from yesterday’s Inspired By post—there are many lovely projects and ideas to browse.

Finally, the winner of the Lacefield Designs pillow giveaway from OBX Trading Group has been chosen! Drumroll please…
