Signature Dutch Door Plans: Custom Designs and Build Guide

Blue Dutch Door - The Inspired Room House Makeover Inspiration

II’ve mentioned Dutch doors on this blog more times than I can count over the past year. I’m not apologizing — the Great Dutch Door Transformation is about to be a real game changer for this house.

Our house is a very, very nice house, but I wanted it to feel like more than just “fine.” It doesn’t need to be lavish or expensive to be memorable. I don’t expect it to be the most stunning home on the internet, but I do want it to feel like home: warm, personal, and full of character.

When we moved in we didn’t inherit a lot of built-in charm, but we did get a great blank slate. Blank slates are full of possibilities. In fact, the Dutch door is helping to shape many of my design decisions — not just the kitchen remodel, but the look of the whole house.

If your home lacks a standout feature, it helps to choose one design element you can claim as your signature. Make it the thing that sets the tone for other choices in the house and gives the space a consistent voice.

I’ve written before about the importance of a signature style piece. Think of it like a favorite accessory you wear often — a watch or pair of earrings that defines your personal style. At home, a signature piece simplifies decisions and raises the impact of everything around it.

Consider how a signature piece could work in your space. You don’t have to limit your home’s identity to one object, but identifying at least one memorable element gives you a clear starting point for decorating and personalizing the rest.

For this house, the signature element will greet you at the entry: Dutch doors. A signature piece doesn’t have to be a door — it could be a striking buffet, a standout rug, or a unique table — but for us, Dutch doors make sense. They convey the character we want this house to show.

Dutch doors have a quiet, friendly personality. They’re unassuming yet charming, practical yet distinctive. They aren’t flashy, but they bring real character, both inside and out. Open and inviting rather than closed off, they capture the welcoming feeling we want to create.

I think a Dutch door perfectly captures the spirit of this house, which makes it an ideal signature piece.

About paint choices: our brick house will get a fresh coat of soft white paint (exact shade still to be decided). The kitchen Dutch door will be painted a shade of blue, inside and out. The front Dutch door may match that blue or echo a color from our previous front door and kitchen cabinets. I’ll share exact paint names and progress as the makeover continues. This little brick house is about to show a spunkier side.

What is your home’s signature piece?

PS. I’ll share more details about our specific Dutch doors in an upcoming post.
