Kylee here — this summer we added window boxes to the exterior of our Cape Cod–style home, and they instantly boosted curb appeal. I love how much character they add, and I can already imagine swapping the plantings with each season.

We chose self-watering window boxes, which have been a game-changer. The reservoir system lets us go about 5–7 days between waterings depending on heat and sun exposure. Water is added through a small PVC fill tube that feeds wicks inside the planter, and I add a balanced fertilizer about once a month to keep everything healthy.

We installed the boxes ourselves. Anyone with intermediate DIY skills can likely handle this project. The main challenges were locating studs in our older plaster walls and having the correct drill bits and anchors. We measured each window and chose boxes that extend just a little past the window trim for balanced proportions.

These photos were taken right after planting, about a month ago. It’s been so satisfying to watch the plants fill out and soften the facade over the past few weeks.

Choosing plants for summer was the hardest part. I leaned toward a neutral palette at first, but we ultimately picked bright, cheerful colors — my husband’s preference — and it turned out to be the perfect choice for summer vibrancy.

Plants we used for summer window boxes
- Petunias
- Calibrachoa
- Bacopa
- Creeping Jenny
- Lavender
- Alonia Big Snow Angelonia
- Lobelia Waterfall Purple
- Euphorbia Starblast Snowdrift
- Salvia
