WWhen we lived in a previous home, the lilacs in the yard hardly ever bloomed. When we moved into this house six years ago in the fall, I had no idea what a wonderful show of flowers awaited the following spring. Each new bush and tree that burst into bloom felt like a small discovery. The happiest moment was when the lilacs finally bloomed—in purple, pink and white.

Their scent fills the house and yard and always lifts my spirits each spring. I wish the blooms lasted longer, so I cut armfuls to bring indoors and enjoy their scent and color for as long as possible. The purple and pink lilacs have finished blooming and the white ones are winding down, but I wanted to share these photos before the garden moves into my other favorites: peonies, hydrangeas and roses.
