First-Time Instant Pot Guide: What to Know Before You Start

True confession: I bought an Instant Pot a few years ago, but I was so nervous about using it that I returned it.

Last year my daughters Kylee and Courtney each bought one and raved about theirs. They shared stories on Instagram about making healthy, flavorful meals, and that inspired me to try again.

Even after buying a new Instant Pot, it sat unused in the box for months. I was hesitant to change my routine and still worried something might go wrong.

Finally, I asked my daughter Kylee to teach me how to use it. I recorded her step-by-step on my Instagram stories — the videos are saved in my story highlights if you want to watch. Her tips were really helpful and made the process much less intimidating.

My first attempt was a success: I made black beans. Nothing fancy, but they turned out delicious and were far better than canned beans. Best of all, nothing exploded.

Next on my list: rice, a one-pot meal, maybe a soup. I’m still a little nervous, but I’ll rewatch the Instagram tutorial and try again — or ask Kylee for another lesson.

This is the Instant Pot model closest to the one I have.
