I have been feeling a little blue around my house lately.

Or maybe more than a little.

Don’t worry—I’m not sad. I mean blue as in the color blue.

You might remember when I joked that my house and furniture “talk” to me and tell me what color they want to be. That playful idea turned out to be a useful way to think about decorating: my home has been nudging me toward shades of blue.

I created inspiration boards to explore the range of blues that appealed to me. Building visual boards—on Pinterest or just a digital collage—helps reveal the palettes you naturally gravitate toward and makes it easier to pull a cohesive scheme together.

You may wonder why a person who loves warm, cozy fall colors would embrace blues and grays. The answer: layers and balance. Warm wood floors, mixed textures, and varied accent hues keep the blues from feeling cold. Instead, the palette reads as peaceful and snug—think of a comfortable beach cottage with a calm, coastal vibe.

Once I decided on a foundational color scheme and applied it to key elements—paint, large furniture pieces, and major textiles—decorating became simpler and more enjoyable. With a clear base palette, I no longer get overwhelmed by too many options. I also make fewer buying mistakes because I can quickly tell if something supports the overall look.

If a new piece complements the established color story, it stays. If it clashes or distracts from the house’s overall mood, it goes. I still enjoy adding pops of other colors—accents keep the rooms lively—but the blues and grays are the glue that ties everything together.

Establishing a foundational color scheme isn’t complicated, but it has made a real difference in how my home comes together.

I’ll share some of the newest blue additions to my rooms in the next post as the season progresses.

I contribute to My Colortopia, part of Glidden, where color inspiration is the focus. Right now Glidden is running the #MyColorfulLife project inviting people to share colorful photos that inspire them. The project gathers images to create a large community mosaic celebrating color and design. I participated in the My Colortopia program with Glidden/AkzoNobel, and as always, my opinions are my own.
