I’m excited to share the recent updates we made to our bedroom. With a few affordable pieces from Walmart, I created a cozier, more inviting space for winter. Small changes—lighting, textiles, and thoughtful accessories—made a big difference in how the room feels.
Thank you Walmart for sponsoring this post!

I enjoy mixing pieces we already owned with new finds to make a house feel like home. Since we moved in last October, the bedroom hadn’t received much attention until January. Choosing this room as my January project helped me focus on small, achievable updates so the space could evolve naturally over time.

Three simple updates to make your bedroom a winter sanctuary
1. Create a Mood-Boosting Ambience
Lighting is one of the fastest ways to change how a room feels, especially in winter. Even a beautiful bedding update or fresh paint won’t make a space feel cozy if it’s only lit by an overhead fixture. Layered lighting—task lights, table lamps, and soft sconces—adds warmth and makes the room relaxing both day and night.

Our bedroom benefits from a lot of natural light through windows and glass doors, but lamps brighten the corners and make the space feel intimate on cloudy days and in the evening.

I added a brass pharmacy lamp that’s great for reading in the corner chair we already owned. Its focused task light makes that nook usable for work or cozy evenings with a book.

A rattan table lamp added ambient light and softened the corner, making the space feel complete. The combination of task and table lighting ensures the entire area feels warm and cheery in the evenings.

We also kept a bird-and-floral lamp we added last year; it continues to bring color and charm to the room.
To free up space on our tiny nightstands, I installed plug-in wall sconces beside the bed. They provide focused bedside light without crowding the surface of the nightstand, which is ideal for smaller rooms.

The sconces I chose have a classic look with linen shades and a soft bronze finish. They coordinate with other hardware and add warmth without the stark contrast of pure black. These small changes transformed the room and made it feel peaceful and settled.

Lighting has made the biggest immediate impact—both in appearance and how the room makes me feel.

2. Add Design Details That Reflect Your Style
Think about the colors and textures that make you feel cozy in winter. Layered textures, patterns, and well-chosen accents give a room personality. You don’t need to finish everything at once—letting a room evolve over time often results in a cozier, more authentic space.

I added textured pillow covers with tassels, a chunky sisal rug, and a stonewashed cotton throw to layer color and texture. These items paired with the pieces we already owned help pull the room together into a cohesive winter look.

A floating picture frame that allows seasonal artwork or quotes is a simple, flexible detail that helps the room feel curated without permanent commitment.

3. Combine Beauty and Function
A winter bedroom should be both beautiful and useful. I spend more time in my room reading, relaxing, and working on small projects, so functional pieces that also look good are essential.

A woven jute ottoman provides texture and serves as a footrest or small table for books and mugs. Stackable white lidded boxes on the bookshelf offer pretty storage for keepsakes, notes, and small items while helping keep surfaces tidy.

What project are you working on this month? I hope these simple updates inspire you to make small changes that have big impact. Shopping thoughtfully for lighting, textiles, and storage can transform a room without a complete overhaul.
