Do you ever wonder how to mix and match patterns in your home? It can feel intimidating to decide what works together. Below I share practical tips for pattern mixing and examples of pillows that pair well to help you visualize different combinations.
How to Mix Patterns (tips adapted from my book The Inspired Room):
Mixing patterns successfully often begins with a simple plan. Choose a limited color palette, play with scale, and balance patterned pieces with solids. These guidelines will help you experiment with confidence.
- Connect similar patterns with a shared color or tone to make them feel cohesive.
- Use three or more patterns for interest, varying their scales for balance.
- Start with a large-scale pattern and add a small-scale pattern in the same color family. Introduce solids to rest the eye.
- Multiple stripes can work together — pair a wide stripe with a narrow stripe for contrast.
- Neutral walls and floors help unify a room filled with patterns.
- Add patterned art or decorative objects in a neutral room to create focal points.
- Include natural patterns like wood grain and stone when planning your mix; they contribute organic texture.
Generally, patterns in a room feel most harmonious when they share a style — traditional with traditional or contemporary with contemporary — but don’t be afraid to be bold when a combination speaks to you.
Above all, allow yourself to experiment. If you love a mix, trust your instincts and break the rules.
Below are several pillow combinations you can mix and match for layered, inviting sofas and chairs.
