I’ve always been charmed by small white lights on porches and trees during winter. They bring warmth, magic, and a welcome glow to the darkest months of the year.
When we moved into our new home last year I discovered the Moravian star lights while searching for porch lighting. They were new to me on the West Coast, and I immediately loved how they elevated our winter décor and traditions without being bulky.
These Moravian stars make a beautiful, magical statement. They’re ideal for smaller homes because they add impact without needing a lot of space or large pieces.
They fold flat for storage, which is a big advantage in a small house. Easy to tuck away until the season returns.
We prefer the plug-in Moravian stars because they stay consistently bright and look cheerful and welcoming on the porch.
We first tried battery-operated versions, hoping for convenience, but they dimmed quickly. The plug-in stars stay bright all evening. For now we run a white extension cord up a post from a nearby outlet; eventually we’ll install a porch outlet, but the extension cord works well in the meantime.

We appreciate the symbolism and tradition of Moravian stars, especially when decorating with items that carry meaning.
Moravian stars have a long history, appearing as early as 1747 in the Moravian community of Herrnhag, Germany. They are traditionally hung beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas as a reminder of the Star of Bethlehem, symbolizing hope and the promise of light overcoming darkness. That story resonates with us and adds depth to our seasonal display.

Last Christmas it snowed—a rare event for our area—and it was peaceful watching the flakes fall as we sat by the fire. The stars swayed gently in the breeze, their light sparkling in the snowfall before the neighborhood was softly blanketed in white.

Best of all, our Moravian stars are more than decoration—they brought calm and joy to the darkest days of winter.
In my book A Lovely Life, I write about how small rituals and cozy touches can transform winter. Those simple lights brightened our evenings and became a memory we would talk about through spring and summer. They’re now a seasonal tradition we look forward to each year.

Although we don’t have snow yet this year, we’re happy to have the stars back to light our porch and brighten our little corner of the world.
Winter Porch Sources:
Moravian stars are available in plug-in and battery versions; we recommend the plug-in styles for steady brightness. They come in different sizes—think about how and where you’ll hang them. Note that sizes can vary slightly from the listed dimensions, so double-check measurements when ordering.
A white extension cord is handy if you don’t have a high porch outlet yet; it can be run up a post to power the lights. Fresh cedar garland is another favorite for the porch—one long strand can wrap a small porch and it keeps its scent and shape well in outdoor conditions.
We also like adding cozy accents like plaid pillows, white birch trees, and Adirondack-style chairs to complete the look. Choosing pieces with a cohesive color palette helps create a calm, welcoming porch scene.

More winter ideas and traditions we enjoy in our home:
We keep a winter candle in the window as a welcoming tradition, make DIY porch lanterns for a warm glow, and build full, fragrant garlands to decorate railings and posts.

Tip: Curate a small collection of seasonal favorites that you return to each year. Keeping a few meaningful pieces on rotation makes decorating simpler and more personal, and the rituals that grow around them bring steady comfort through the seasons.
