My mother installed a deep white sink with a contrasting black underside in our beach house laundry room years ago. I loved it immediately and have been on the lookout ever since for a place to use a sink like that in my own home.

Trough-style wall-hung sinks are such a playful, practical choice for a laundry room or bathroom.

One trick I learned while restoring our English Tudor was to have metal items powder coated. That process works beautifully on the undersides of wall-hung sinks, bathtubs and even heat registers, as well as on appliances, outdoor furniture and many other pieces. Powder coating gives a durable, even finish and lets you change or refresh a color to suit your decor.

Because powder coating comes in so many shades, you can get creative with color and match or contrast other finishes in the room.

Many of these sinks are finished with powder coating on their undersides to achieve those saturated, even colors. The process is both durable and attractive, which makes it ideal for frequently used fixtures like trough sinks.

When we moved into our 1930s house, the boiler room registers were buried under layers of paint and grime. We took them to a local powder-coating shop and the results were transformative — the registers looked almost better than new after the fresh finish.

A trough sink is high on my wish list. Its combination of vintage charm and practical utility makes it a delightful addition to a laundry room or bathroom.
