Outdoor Wall Lantern Ideas: Styling Tips and Design Inspiration

non-electric wall hung lantern + styling ideas

Who knew that a small bunny holding a candle inside a lantern by the front door could bring so much delight? For me, simple pleasures are everything, and I’m enjoying the little touches that brighten my home.

I ordered a wall lantern this winter and finally found time to hang it. It’s designed to be easy to mount—the back has pre-drilled holes—so even if you’re not a regular DIYer, you can install it with a standard drill and masonry bit to attach it to brick.

Although our porch already has a ceiling fixture, I wanted a charming lantern near the door without running new wiring. A non-electric, wall-hung lantern is perfect for a small porch because it creates a focal point without taking up floor space. It’s large enough to make a statement and offers plenty of room to change the display with the seasons.

Once the lantern was up, I placed a small bunny candle holder I’ve had for years inside, added a battery-operated taper candle and layered in a mix of faux and real greenery for spring. The result is welcoming and cheerful—easy to update for every season.

This style of lantern lends itself to so many decorating possibilities. It’s similar to fillable glass lamps that allow you to change the contents for different looks. I’ll share a few ideas below to inspire your own seasonal displays.

Styling ideas for a non-electric wall lantern:

  • Copper or warm-colored string lights for a soft glow
  • Battery-operated pillar or taper candles for a safe, realistic flame
  • Mini pumpkins or gourds for fall displays
  • A bouquet of fresh or faux flowers for spring and summer
  • Pinecones and natural elements for autumn and winter
  • A small potted plant or succulents for a living touch
  • Seashells and sand for a coastal theme
  • Moss, greenery, and twigs for a woodland look
  • Seasonal ornaments, berries, or ribbon to dress up the base

I love how the lantern invites creativity—swap in pieces each season for an instant refresh. It’s especially nice when the lantern has a handle so you can also hang it from a hook if desired.

I’m already planning a cozy fall vignette—“fall-nestifying” the lantern with warm foliage and miniature pumpkins. I also like the look of pairing two lanterns when space allows, though our porch only fits one.

I’ll update the lantern regularly and try to share a nighttime photo so you can see the cozy effect of the candlelight.

There are many ways to mount a lantern: directly on the wall or hung from a hook using the lantern’s handle. Either approach works well depending on your porch layout and preference.

I’ll continue to share new lantern arrangements as I change them through the year. It’s a small detail that makes the entry feel inviting.
