Home Office Decorating Guide: Part 1 — Design Tips & Layout Ideas

Before

When Amanda from Everyday Elements told me she planned to completely redecorate her home office, I was thrilled to follow along. As I mentioned in my 2011 Home Goals, this year I’m focused on making my home not just attractive but comfortable and functional. That’s exactly what Amanda wants for her office: a space that looks good, works well, and feels like a personal sanctuary.

Many of us dream of a dedicated space to create, write, read, and work. Amanda’s makeover is the perfect example of turning that dream into reality. I invited her to share the process here on The Inspired Room so we can all watch the transformation. Amanda will handle the project herself; I’m simply tagging along to enjoy the progress. She hopes to complete the makeover within a couple of weeks—much faster than my usual projects, which take far longer than intended!

ROOM MAKEOVER DETAILS:

Budget: $1,000. Goal: Create a modern-traditional home office that supports business tasks while also providing a welcoming spot to visit with friends, relax with a book, and put your feet up. The room should feel like both a sanctuary and a practical workspace. Rough Deadline: End of April.

I’ve heard a little insider info: she might be heading to IKEA this weekend and may share photos from the trip—so we could get a peek at the shopping haul and ideas she brings back. I’m excited to watch Amanda turn the current “before” photos into an inviting and livable home office. I’ll update you here on The Inspired Room as the project evolves.

Here is Amanda’s home office REVEAL!

I also want to thank everyone for the kind and encouraging responses to my post yesterday. Your words brought me to tears and meant so much. It’s energizing to be part of a caring community of readers, fellow bloggers, friends, and supportive people from around the world. Thank you for your encouragement—I appreciate you all.

PS. A quick note from my sponsor, Sarah from Three Boys—she’s a talented DIYer and has a special announcement for Earth Day:
Shaklee is offering free membership (a $19.95 value) with a $30 product purchase. For details and the Three Boys promo for new members, check Sarah’s blog or contact her directly for information and surprises at checkout.
Do you have a home office? What would your dream workspace include?
Let’s give Amanda three cheers for taking on this project and sharing the process with us!
