Small Balcony Makeover Ideas for Townhouse Renovations

Small balcony decorating ideas

Hello! Kylee here to share a simple makeover for my tiny balcony. When my husband and I bought our townhouse two years ago, I was excited to have outdoor spaces for plants. We have a very small backyard and an even smaller second-floor balcony off the main living area.

Balcony Before

Shortly after moving in I bought a small table and chairs for the balcony hoping we’d use it often. In reality, we rarely sat outside because the deck felt uninspired. Since the balcony doesn’t offer a great view, it needed to be inviting on its own to draw us out.

This spring I decided to transform that tiny space into a cozy, appealing spot where we’d actually want to spend time.

Flowers were an essential first step. I chose affordable, attractive pots and planted a variety of blooms. Because I can see the plants from inside, I usually remember to water them, and having to step outside to water encourages me to spend time out there.

Once the plants were in place, I wanted to tone down the bright red railings that matched our indoor floors and couches. The repeated red felt overwhelming from inside, so I looked for a neutral solution that would soften the view and add a little style.

This bamboo fencing helped minimize the red while giving the balcony a relaxed, tropical vibe. It also adds some screening where needed. If you need more privacy or to fully cover an unsightly area, consider layering the fencing since some panels have gaps.

Outdoor pillows and a patterned rug brought warmth and personality to the space. Small, thoughtful touches like textiles make an outdoor area feel lived-in and welcoming.

I repurposed an old wine rack that previously served as a coffee stand. It fits perfectly on the balcony and now holds herbs I use in cooking, making the space both decorative and functional.

Since the makeover, I’ve enjoyed many mornings drinking coffee outside and my husband and I have shared meals and wine on warm evenings. The balcony feels like a natural extension of our living space and is pleasing to look at from inside.

The update required minimal effort and a small budget, but it made a big difference. A tiny outdoor area can have a meaningful impact on daily life when it’s arranged with intention.
