AI admit it: I’m a home dreamer. As a child I imagined living in a castle, and though I’ve grown up enough to know I probably won’t own a chateau in the south of France, I still love to create that feeling at home. I want to feel like the little girl who lives in her dream house, even if in reality I live in a new house on a small lot in Washington. Don’t burst my bubble.

After a recent trip to Victoria and a visit to the beautiful Empress Hotel, I’m in the mood for a summer house on the French coast—perhaps like the one in the photo above. I picture it overlooking the sea, with room for guests and plenty of light. Sound over the top? Maybe. But imagining it is half the fun. You’d visit, right? I’d throw a party and give you your own guest wing.
Until that dream becomes reality, I can bring elements of that style into my current home with a few thoughtfully chosen pieces.
