It’s the first week back into the routine after the holidays. There’s a little sadness — I enjoyed Christmas so much this year — but the new year brings fresh possibilities, and it’s nice to look ahead.
This weekend I started taking down the crunchy greenery (it drives me crazy when needles end up on the floor and stairs), then packed away the rest of the Christmas decor, and finally brought the tree outside.
I keep my holiday decorating pretty simple, and I usually leave any greenery that still looks fresh. Because of that, there’s not a huge amount to put away, but the house always feels a bit bare the first day after the decorations are gone, especially in the corner where the tree stood. That’s when I know it’s time for a winter refresh. I suspect some of you feel the same this week.

I love the clean, decluttered feeling that comes after the holidays, but I also want to fill the void without adding clutter. My goal is to reset the house and warm it back up. I’m smitten with the idea of a cozy winter home — doesn’t that sound like the perfect place to be right now?
Even though the holiday rush is over and we’re back to our regular winter routine, I’m already dreaming of curling up by the fire under a big, soft blanket for the coming months. If only there were snow outside — we mostly get rain where I live, but the cold makes me imagine a soft white blanket on the ground.
When it’s cold and the Christmas decor has been packed away, I like to add simple layers to bring warmth and comfort back into the rooms. Here are some of the elements I turn to for a cozy winter reset.

Ten favorite layers to make the home feel cozy for winter
1. Layers of winter table linens to add texture and warmth to dining spaces.
2. Fur and knit pillows on sofas for soft, tactile comfort.
3. Extra throws and blankets draped on chairs, sofas, and shelving.
4. Natural textures — woven baskets, branches, and pine cones for seasonal interest.
5. Curtains on windows and interior doors to help insulate and create a snug feel.
6. Warm area rugs to define living spaces and add underfoot warmth.
7. Additional blankets layered on beds for cozy, inviting bedrooms.
8. Stacks of winter books beside the fireplace and next to beds for relaxed reading moments.
9. Groupings of candles on mantels, dressers, and console tables to create a gentle glow.
10. Extra table lamps to provide warm, mood-enhancing light throughout the house.
Think about which of these elements you could gather or add to make your home feel cozier this winter.
