Refine Your Authentic Style: Build a Signature Look That Fits You

Refining Your Authentic Style - The Inspired Room

I love finding inspiration for my home in unexpected places. Whether I’m on a walk, browsing a magazine, or window shopping, a color, texture, or mood can stop me in my tracks and feel like something I want to bring into my own space.

On a recent stroll near my Seattle neighborhood I spotted a small vignette in a shop and quickly snapped a photo before anyone noticed. I’m often sneaky like that. (I don’t know the man who happened to be in the picture—hello if you’re reading this—he’s now an accidental part of today’s post.)

The display at the shop — Lucca — caught my eye because of its layered textures, rich colors, and playful details. Open rattan shelves filled with interesting objects, whimsical animal figures, antique lighting, chippy furniture, chalkboards, and deep navy walls all combined into a cohesive, charming scene. Many of those elements feel familiar to me because I’ve used similar pieces in past homes and continue to incorporate them now.

These aren’t just random trends I like for a moment; they are design choices that keep resurfacing in my work and in the places I’m drawn to. Natural materials, vintage finds, layered textures, and a touch of quirkiness are staples I return to again and again.

Every home naturally evolves. My current house will be different from the last, and the next one will be different again, but there’s a throughline in the things I love. Over time a home becomes a collage of preferences, memories, and discoveries—small details pulled from places that moved you. When you follow the things that genuinely appeal to you, you bring that thread of yourself from house to house.

Your home should reflect who you are. It’s a process to learn what that means for you and how to express it. Give yourself permission to experiment: try a color, keep a texture you love, or incorporate an unexpected object that makes you smile. As you live with these choices, refine what works and edit what doesn’t. The result will be a space that feels authentically yours.

Personal style grows through discovery and refinement. The more you pay attention to what resonates, the more confident you’ll become about the elements that represent you. That confidence shows in a home that feels natural and intentional rather than staged or forced.

What elements in a home make your heart flutter?
