Greetings! Happy first day of summer. We often think about the need for extra “spring cleaning,” but who wants more chores once summer arrives? Not me. I still like a tidy home, though, and that’s where five-minute cleaning sessions become a summer lifesaver.
In summer the house seems to get dustier. With sunlight streaming through the windows, dust and smudges become much more noticeable.
Five minutes might not sound like much, but a quick, regular five-minute dusting makes the whole home feel fresher.
When I spot something that can be dusted or wiped in five minutes or less, I handle it immediately. I also keep a short list of five-minute tasks so family members can pitch in. Even young children can help with simple dusting chores. They won’t be perfect—neither am I—but it’s a great way to teach responsibility and get a little help around the house.
Below are five often-overlooked dusty spots that take five minutes or less to clean. Use this list as-is or customize it for your home. Divide the tasks among family members so you can enjoy both a cleaner house and more summer downtime.

Five 5-Minute Dust-Busting Summer Tasks
1. Lamps and lampshades
Lamps and lampshades collect dust and cobwebs quickly. We often dust tabletops but overlook shades and lamp bases. If a lampshade resists a dry cloth, vacuum it gently with a brush attachment. A fabric lint roller also works well on fabric shades to lift lint and stubborn dust.

2. Table legs and chair legs
Lower frames and legs of tables and chairs often collect a layer of dust. I typically remember to vacuum visible surfaces but forget the underside of furniture. Make dusting furniture legs a follow-up task after vacuuming. It’s an easy chore to hand to kids: once the floor is vacuumed, they can quickly wipe down chair and table legs. Regular attention prevents dust buildup and keeps rooms smelling fresher.

3. Cabinet doors
I prefer a clean kitchen, and cooking inevitably leaves cabinets with fingerprints and grime. Flat cabinet doors wipe down quickly, but even detailed shaker-style doors can be kept tidy in five minutes a day. Use a dry or slightly damp cloth to run around moldings and the face of each door. For tight corners, cotton swabs help remove buildup.
Dark cabinets can hide smudges, but they still need the same regular attention as light-colored ones. Procrastinating only makes the grime harder to remove.

4. Baseboards
With pets, kids, open doors and windows in summer, floors and baseboards quickly accumulate dust. A quick five-minute wipe along baseboards restores a room’s clean look. Pull furniture out periodically to reach hidden dust; what looks terrible at first usually takes less than five minutes to fix.
Assign baseboard dusting as a simple summer chore for kids—it’s low to the ground and easy to manage. Small, regular efforts keep dust from becoming a bigger project later.

5. Air filters
One of the best ways to reduce overall dust is to keep HVAC filters fresh. Replacing air filters regularly cuts down on circulating dust and allergens and helps the system run efficiently. Using a subscription filter service simplifies this task—filters arrive on a schedule and are easy to swap out.

Neglecting filters lets dust build up and can cause problems for HVAC systems. A clogged filter also increases particles in your home’s air. Once you receive a shipment, changing a filter takes about a minute—small effort, big benefit. Consider selecting a frequency that matches your household needs: every three months is standard, but more frequent changes help if you have pets or allergies.
Keeping filters fresh saves energy, reduces allergens, and lowers maintenance hassles, which means less dusting overall and a cleaner home environment.
